Little Ashcan students are currently working on observational watercolor paintings focused on flowers, inspired by the realist approach of Joseph Raffael. Through this project, students are developing their ability to observe natural forms closely and translate them into detailed, realistic watercolor compositions.
The goal of the assignment is to strengthen watercolor techniques while building an understanding of light, color layering, and natural contrast.
Students begin by carefully sketching flowers from observation, then gradually build their paintings from light washes to darker tones. This approach helps them develop control, depth, and a more natural sense of form.
Inspired by Joseph Raffael, known for his large-scale, highly detailed watercolor paintings of nature and floral subjects, students are encouraged to slow down, focus on detail, and appreciate the beauty found in everyday natural forms.
Through this process, students not only improve technical skills but also gain confidence in observational drawing and painting. Each artwork reflects patience, attention to detail, and personal interpretation of the subject matter.
