Our Little Ashcan artists recently completed a beautiful nature-inspired project that combined drawing, texture, and mixed-media techniques!
Students used:
Black paper
White paper 📄

Elmer’s Glue
Students began by following a teacher demonstration on how to draw flowers using simple shapes and textures. Using graphite pencils, they created their own monochromatic landscapes on white paper, focusing on line, shape, and detail to build their floral scenes.

Once their landscapes were complete, students created unique butterfly wings using black paper and pastels. They experimented with different patterns and textures, giving each butterfly its own personality and style. 🦋✨
It’s all about the details!
Finally, students assembled their artwork by attaching the butterfly wings and clay butterfly bodies to their landscapes with Elmer's glue. The finished pieces brought together the flowers, butterflies, and landscapes into imaginative scenes created entirely by our young artists.
This project gave students the opportunity to practice drawing and composition while exploring how different materials and textures can work together in one artwork. Most importantly, it was a chance for each student to make creative choices and express their own ideas!
