Bringing Prehistoric Art to Life: Ashcan Studio Students Explore Lascaux Cave Paintings

At Ashcan Studio, our students recently explored the Lascaux Cave Paintings, dating back 20,000 BCE in France. These prehistoric artworks feature stunning depictions of bulls, horses, and other wildlife, created with natural pigments. The exact purpose of the paintings remains a mystery, but their beauty and scale continue to inspire artists today.

For this project, students used coffee-stained paper to mimic cave walls and painted wildlife and hunters with natural pigments like beet and blueberry juice. This hands-on approach allowed them to experience the challenges and creativity of ancient artists while exploring composition, color, and texture.

The project encouraged focus, thoughtful design choices, and creative problem-solving. Each student’s piece reflects their own interpretation while honoring the prehistoric style, demonstrating how historical art can inspire modern creativity.

At Ashcan Studio, we aim to connect students with art history through immersive, hands-on projects that strengthen technical skills and spark imagination.
